Chastity Cages: A Beginner’s Guide to Sizing, Safety and Keyholders
Chastity cages are one of the most popular toys in femdom, and one of the easiest to get wrong. How they work, how to choose a size and material, and the safety rules for wearing one.
A chastity cage is a device worn over the penis that prevents erections and touching, usually locked so that only a partner, the keyholder, can take it off. In femdom it is a classic tool of orgasm control: she holds the key, and with it, the decision about when (or whether) her partner gets release.
How does a chastity cage work?
Most male chastity devices have three parts:
- A base ring that sits behind the testicles.
- The cage that encloses the penis.
- A lock (or locking pin) that joins them.
A chastity belt is a different design, worn around the waist like a belt with a shield or tube at the front. Belts are more secure but much harder to fit and more expensive. Most people start with a cage.
Why do people wear one?
- Orgasm control and denial: the anticipation is the point.
- Power exchange: a constant, physical reminder of who is in charge.
- Devotion: some couples treat locking up as a ritual in a female-led relationship.
- Novelty and play: a weekend lock-up can be a fun game even without a wider dynamic.
Choosing a material
- Medical-grade stainless steel: durable, easy to clean and good for longer wear. Heavier, and it can feel cold at first.
- Medical-grade silicone: soft and comfortable, a popular first cage. Less secure because it flexes.
- Resin or plastic: light and cheap, and often good for beginners. Quality varies, so avoid cracks, sharp seams and unlabelled materials.
Skip mystery-metal bargains. Cheap cages are a common cause of skin irritation and bad fit. Our gear and chastity shops list stores that label their materials and offer real sizing help.
How to choose the right size
Fit matters more than anything else. Always follow the maker's sizing guide, but in general:
- Base ring: measure the circumference around the base of the penis and scrotum while soft and relaxed, then use the manufacturer's chart to pick a ring diameter. A ring that is too tight is dangerous. One that is too loose lets you slip out.
- Cage length: should be close to your soft length. Too short pinches and causes pressure. Too long lets things slide forward and chafe.
Many people get the size wrong the first time. Shops that sell multiple ring sizes in one kit are a smart choice for a first cage.
How long can you wear a chastity cage?
Start small: an hour or two while you're at home. Increase gradually over days and weeks as you learn how your body reacts.
Take it off immediately if you notice:
- numbness, tingling or coldness,
- skin that turns blue, purple or very dark,
- swelling, persistent pain or broken skin.
For longer wear, remove and clean the cage regularly and keep the skin underneath clean and dry. If you have any circulation problems, diabetes or other medical conditions, talk to a doctor before using one.
Can you sleep in a chastity cage?
Night-time erections are normal and can be uncomfortable or even painful in a cage. Many people remove it at night until they know how their body reacts. Never force yourself to stay locked through pain.
What is a keyholder?
The keyholder is the person who holds the key and decides when the cage comes off. In femdom that is usually the domme. It is a role with real responsibility: a good keyholder sets clear rules, checks in on her partner's comfort and never refuses an unlock when there is a medical concern.
Emergency safety
- Always have an emergency release. Keep a spare key somewhere accessible, or use numbered plastic locks that can be snapped in an emergency, so the keyholder can see whether they were opened.
- Don't wear a metal cage for medical scans, and remove any cage before sport or long periods of heat.
- Make sure the keyholder knows that a "release now" request for health reasons is never a game.
