Domme Meaning: Domme vs Dominatrix vs Mistress
Domme, dominatrix, Mistress, Goddess: they’re often used as if they mean the same thing, but they don’t quite. Here’s what “domme” means and how the titles differ.
A domme is a woman who takes the dominant role in a BDSM or power-exchange dynamic. It's the feminine form of dom, and it is pronounced exactly the same: "dom". The extra -me simply signals that she is a woman.
Where the word comes from
Domme borrows the French habit of adding -e to make a word feminine. It became common in kink communities as a shorter, more everyday alternative to dominatrix.
Domme vs dominatrix
- Domme is the broad, everyday term for any dominant woman, in a scene, a relationship or online.
- Dominatrix carries a stronger association with professional domination, dungeons and fetish wear, although it is also used for lifestyle dommes.
Every dominatrix is a domme, but not every domme would call herself a dominatrix. Our guide to what a dominatrix is explains the professional side in detail.
Mistress, Goddess, Queen: titles vs roles
These are titles, not job descriptions. A domme chooses how she wants to be addressed:
- Mistress: the classic title, implying authority and ownership in the dynamic.
- Goddess: often used where worship and devotion are central.
- Ma'am, Madame, Lady, Queen: variations that suit different styles.
Never assume. Online especially, calling a stranger "Mistress" uninvited can come across as presumptuous. Use her name or the title she lists.
What are the different types of dommes?
There's no official list, but you'll hear these often:
- Lifestyle domme: dominant in her own relationships, not for money.
- Pro-domme: a professional who offers paid sessions. Find one through a pro-domme directory.
- Findomme: focuses on financial domination. See our findom glossary.
- Sensual or nurturing domme: leads with warmth, praise and control rather than pain.
- Strict or sadistic domme: enjoys discipline, intensity and pushing agreed limits.
- Switch: someone who enjoys both the dominant and submissive roles.
What does a domme do?
That depends entirely on her and her partner. It might be giving orders and setting rules, leading a scene, running a female-led relationship, or anything in between. What every good domme shares is responsibility: she leads, but she also keeps her partner safe, respects limits and makes sure there's aftercare.
Femdom vs domme
Femdom is the dynamic (female domination). A domme is the woman in charge. Read our beginner's guide to femdom to see how it all fits together, and what it means to be a sub for the other side.
